Context
This scene occurs early in Act I, where everyone is sitting outside on the lawn of the country estate. Astrov, the doctor, and Vanya, are complaining about their wasted lives and general unhappiness. Both have been especially dissatisfied since the arrival of Professor Serebryakov and his new wife, Yelena. Their arrival has disrupted the peaceful routine of country life, and the two men are not taking it well.
