Context
Mary, Norma, Dolores, and Queenie are working in the laundry of St. Saviours home. They are all at varying stages in their pregnancies, with Norma the most advanced. As they work, Norma reads aloud from a medical textbook, while Dolores reads hesitantly from a teen annual. None of the girls seem particularly aware of how labor will actually happen, and they gaze mystified at the images in the medical book. Queenie enjoys shocking the others with revealing the gory bits of childbirth.
