AGGIE Oh my, look at the time. Dave’s sure to be looking for me.
DELIA Oh, stay a bit longer. We’d have seen him pass.
AGGIE I suppose. Delia, you have no idea what this afternoon has done for me. I was so... I was so... (she trails off, fighting tears)
DELIA Aggie. You have no idea what this has done for me. We have company half the days out of the week. But it’s “company”.
(DAVE enters, struggling a little for balance.)
DAVE Aggie! Aggie!
AGGIE And there is my husband at last.
DELIA Oh, too soon. Too soon. I’ll go up and fetch Johnny and carry him out to the wagon for you. It gives me one more chance to hold him.
AGGIE Very well.
(AGGIE crosses to DAVE.)
DAVE Ag! There you are! Ag, Three threshin's today. I got three fellas said I could have some of their business.
AGGIE That’s wonderful.
DAVE Three... where’s the baby? (baby cry.) Oh.
DELIA Hello, Mr. Johnson. I’m Mrs. Otis Hall. You must bring your wife to town more often... and accompany her on her shopping. She is such lovely company, don’t you think?
DAVE I suppose.
DELIA Perhaps, prior to your other visits, you could pay us a call as well. That would be pleasant, wouldn’t it?
DAVE I... yes ma’am.
DELIA Aggie, I look so forward to seeing you again.
AGGIE Thank you. Good night.
DELIA Good night, dear.
(They mount the wagon and start off. Delia looks on then exits.)
DAVE What’s that?
AGGIE Nothing.
DAVE Mrs. Hall, huh. That’s the lawyer’s new wife?
AGGIE Yes. She was very... hospitable.
DAVE Well, don’t let her go filling your head with crazy notions. Puttin’ on airs. It’ll be another month of Sundys before you set foot in her house again – I can promise you that.
AGGIE Alright. Though she did say she might come to call. Would you like me to send word that she’s not welcome?
DAVE That’s exactly the sort of thing I’m talking about. Now you listen...
AGGIE No, you listen. I’m not in the mood to fight. How about the two of us just don’t talk.
DAVE Alright... but you’re just lucky I’m in a good mood.
AGGIE (bitterly) Yes. I’m lucky.
