Context
Ian, a 45-year-old journalist, has brought Cate to a hotel room. There is a past relationship between the two, and he desperately wants her physically, while she has no interest in sex and is there just because she cares about him. In this scene, they briefly discuss their lives outside of each other--he was once married and had a son, and she is looking for a job in order to support her mother and brother. Ian is also terminally ill, but acts as though he doesn’t mind death.
