Context
Charles and Ruth Condomine have just held a seance with the eccentric Madame Arcati, intending it to be fun research for Charles' next book. However, Charles did not count on it bring back the ghost of his first wife, Elvira. At the beginning of this scene, Elvira is present in the room but she has not yet been spotted by Charles. When Charles discovers her presence he is caught in an hysterical two-way conversation between Elvira and Ruth (who is blind to Elvira's presence).

Ruth: Would you say the evening had been profitable?
