Context
Nick Bottom was rehearsing a play in the woods with the other mechanicals when the mischievous sprite, Puck, transformed his head into that of an ass. Bottom does not realize what has happened but he cannot understand why the other men have run away from him in fear. His singing awakens the Queen of the Fairies, Titania, who has been asleep in her fairy bower. She too has had much put upon her by Puck, which induces her to fall in love with the first thing she sees....Bottom the ass.
