Afterplay

Brian Friel’s one-act, Afterplaym features two Chekhovian characters who meet twenty years after we last encountered them in each of Chekhov's plays. Sonya, Uncle Vanya’s devoted niece, and Andrey, the intellectual but henpecked brother from The Three Sisters meet in a Moscow café and exchange stories. Each weaves a fantasy tale of what life might have been, but while Andrey quickly admits that he is only dreaming of, Sonya clings to the hope that her fantasies may still come to pass. The characters provide an evening of comfort to each other in a revolutionary Moscow that neither would have recognized twenty years before.
