Synopsis
Before Oz is a biographical portrait of writer L. Frank Baum as he conceives what would become one of the most significant stories in history: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. But before the yellow brick road, the ruby slippers, and the iconic characters, there was a husband and father trying to make ends meet. Set between 1881 and 1900, the play follows Frank as he works dissatisfying odd jobs and even moves his family to the Dakota Territory in search of a new life. But his true passion is storytelling, and he brings the whimsical Land of Oz to life in vivid detail. Frank is a gifted writer---if he could just get past his fear of failure.
Before Oz can be staged with a simple or elaborate set and a flexible cast. The playwright suggests casting without regard to the physical appearance of the historical figures.
