Synopsis

Gene leads an ordinary life: attending college, working in his mother’s laundromat, and doing skateboard tricks for fun and profit. But his world is turned upside down on his 21st birthday when his mother, tough and determined Mrs. Slater, reveals that his father was murdered in the Poconos 14 years ago, and now that Gene has come of age, it is his duty to avenge his father’s death. Gene does his best to disbelieve this wild story, and tries to focus his attention on Caitlin, his Russian literature class crush. Unfortunately, Caitlin is in love with their professor, the tormented Carl Raymond. Carl, in a Dostoyevskian delirium, is obsessed with murdering Brad, an ordinary appliance repairman. And Brad’s guest Lily, a mysterious artist with an unknown agenda, is connected to Carl, Caitlin, and the dearly departed Mr. Slater….. In A Devil Inside, David Lindsay-Abaire has crafted a gruesome, blood-soaked comedy, a fun and frenzied homage to Russian Literature, in which a cast of tormented characters careen through their cursed, intertwined lives as New York City, with fire and flood, disintegrates around them.
