Plot

**Act One **

The show opens on a quaint little farm where Drake, a father awaiting the birth of his new hatchlings, ponders life on the farm and begins to introduce all of his farmyard friends (“A Poultry Tale”). All run off in a flurry of feathers leaving none but mother-to-be Ida sitting alone on her nest. She is getting restless and calls out for Drake. She reminds him of the promise he made to help expand the nest before the babies come. The attention shifts to the eggs sitting beneath her, four perfect blue eggs and one very large brown egg. Drake jests that he reckons it is a turkey egg, Ida on the other hand is not amused by his comments and wishes he would take on more responsibility with the eggs. Sensing her aggravation, he makes a hasty exit to avoid any further conversation. Ida begins to think on motherhood, with all of its highs and lows. A neighboring moorhen, Maureen, drops by and helps Ida sort through her feelings (“The Joys of Motherhood “).
