Mame opened on Broadway on May 24, 1966, at the Winter Garden Theater. This premiere production was directed by Gene Saks and starred Angela Lansbury as Mame, Frankie Michaels as Patrick Dennis, Beatrice Arthur as Vera Charles, and Charles Braswell as Beauregard Burnside. It closed four years later at the Broadway Theatre, after earning Tony Awards for Lansbury, Arthur, and Michaels, as well as nominations for Best Musical, Composer, Direction, Choreography, and Scenic Design.
The role of Mame was filled by Celeste Holm in the National Tour, and a West End production starring Ginger Rogers
