Musical

Overview

Synopsis

Fun, sexy, and seductive, Cruel Intentions is the ultimate ‘90s throwback. Venture into the rich and manipulative world of step-siblings Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil. Driven by revenge, lust, and passion, and oblivious to the feelings of others, the siblings make an eventful bet: can Sebastian seduce the new headmaster’s daughter, Annette Hargrove, and strip her of her prized virginity? Meanwhile, can Kathryn get her revenge on naive and innocent student Cecile, who Kathryn blames for wrecking her last relationship? The chase is on for both siblings! However, Sebastian soon learns that there is one issue getting in the way that he could never have imagined: love.

Based on the hit film of the same name and featuring a jukebox score of classic '90s tunes, Cruel Intentions has gained a cult following and has been performed across the world following its successful Off-Broadway run in 2017.

Key Terms

An adaptation is a reworking of a story from one medium or cultural context into another, such as turning a novel into a play or updating a classic play’s setting. Adaptations often reinterpret themes, characters, and style for new audiences. They can range from faithful recreations to bold reimaginings.

A ballad is a song style that tells a story through simple, lyrical verses and a steady rhythm. In theatre, ballads are often slow and emotional, allowing characters to reveal deep feelings or reflect on personal journeys. They can be used to highlight romance, longing, or moments of dramatic intensity.

A jukebox musical is a type of musical where the score is made up of pre-existing, well-known popular songs instead of original music.
