The Wreckers

Opera

Writers: Ethel Smyth

Context

Dame Ethel Smyth’s opera The Wreckers is adapted from Henry Brewster’s Cornish drama, originally presented in French as Les Naufrageurs. Despite Smyth offering it to many different French houses for the premier, it did not gain any popularity in France. It received its first performance in German, in Leipzig in 1906, but it was heavily cut. Smyth hated the new version and, in order to halt the production, forcibly removed the copies from the orchestra pit herself. Her persistence in finding someone to produce this opera as she wrote it gained her quite a reputation in the industry.
