After the premiere of Anna Bolena on December 26, 1830, at the Teatro Carcano, Milan, Donizetti had secured himself a position as one of the foremost composers of his time, an expert of bel canto style, and carved out his place next to his contemporaries Bellini and Rossini. Musically, dramatically, and thematically, Anna Bolena really was Donizetti’s crowning glory at this point in his career, and was wildly successful.
It was snapped up for performance across the world in the following years, travelling first to London, then to New Orleans, and the opera enjoyed 20 years of recognition
