Since its first performance at the Paris opera, in December 1840, Donizetti’s La Favorite has enjoyed continuous success. In the first 50 years of its existence, it travelled across the world, and received performances in the original French version in both France and the US, an Italian translation across Italy, and even in English translation in London by the 1890s. In the early part of the 20th century, the Italian translation became standard and many performances were enjoyed as part of the renewed interest in bel canto masterpieces.
