Inspired by the stories of his grandmother, David Henry Hwang first drafted the subject matter of Golden Child when he himself was still a child. He recorded stories from his grandmother, and used the tapes to create a family history and biography that he refers to as a way to “recontextualize myself.” While the story of Golden Child is based on his family (his great-grandfather did have three wives and did introduce Christianity to the family), the specific events surrounding these family members are Hwang’s invention.
The majority of the play is set in a Chinese village in 1918 and 1919,
