Overview

Synopsis

Young Lady of Property by Horton Foote is a poignant coming-of-age drama set in a small Texas town in the 1920s. The story centers on Wilma, a seventeen-year-old girl who dreams of marrying her boyfriend, Bobby, and settling down in the house she expects to inherit from her deceased mother. However, her plans are disrupted when her father announces his intention to sell the house and remarry a woman Wilma barely knows. Faced with the prospect of losing her home and the future she envisioned, Wilma must confront the emotional weight of change and the complexities of adulthood.

As Wilma navigates this personal crisis, she leans on her best friend Arabella and grapples with feelings of betrayal, longing, and the need for independence. The play tenderly explores themes of family, memory, and identity, portraying a young woman’s struggle to assert control over her life in a world where decisions are often made for her. With subtle emotional shifts and richly drawn characters, Young Lady of Property captures the quiet heartbreak and resilience of youth standing at the threshold of maturity.
