Plot

Prologue

In a cozy room, a group of young men sit around writing. Young Man 1 sits apart from the rest. They are all trying to tell their stories but they have writer’s block. Into the midst of the group comes E.M. Forster (‘Morgan’). Young Man 1 asks for Morgan’s help to tell their story and they find a place to begin.

Act One

Toby Darling is at a showbiz party in the Hamptons, leaving a series of increasingly drunken voicemails for his partner, Eric Glass. He wants Eric to pack a bag and come and join him for the weekend. The scene then transfers to their apartment, where Eric is packing. Toby walks in hungover and miserable and tells Eric that he threw up over Meryl Streep and snuck out the following morning before anyone was awake. He is humiliated but doesn’t want Eric to apologize for him. However, Eric decides to ring their friend and party host, Walter Poole, anyway. Walter puts Eric’s mind at rest and tells him not to worry about it.

The scene then changes to a Friday night
