Plot

ACT ONE

It is Christmastime, and Nora Helmer enters her sitting room, carrying packages and telling the deliveryman where to place the Christmas tree. Her husband Torvald Helmer, working in his study, calls out to her, playful referring to Nora as a “lark” and “little squirrel.” More importantly, he chides her for spending so much money on Christmas gifts, but Nora is determined to have a beautiful holiday for their children. Because Torvald was recently promoted at the bank, she believes they can indulge a bit after living so thriftily for so many years.

Two visitors arrive. One is Dr. Rank, a close family friend. He goes into Torvald’s study. Nora is left alone with the other guest: Mrs. Kristine Linde, an old schoolmate. Mrs. Linde is widowed, spending the last few years struggling to get by, as she was left with no money (and childless). She hopes that Torvald might have a position open for her at the bank.
