Act 1, Scene 1. London. The Palace.
Suffolk has arrived at the royal castle to bring King Henry VI his new Bride, Queen Margaret. King Henry is surrounded but his royal advisors and his dukes, who all welcome Margaret. However, once Gloucester begins reading the articles of agreement from France in exchange for Margaret, the dukes are appalled to hear that the King has agreed to give up Maine and Anjou, two important French lands, without even a dowry from Margaret’s father, The King of Naples. The young King is oblivious to this error and exits with the new queen and Suffolk, whom he’s given the new title Duke of Suffolk.
When the King, Queen, and Duke of Suffolk leave, Gloucester voices his concern to the other Dukes. Gloucester is enraged and fears that Suffolk will try to rule the kingdom. He prophesies that France will be lost and exits,
The Cardinal of Winchester, who is an enemy of Gloucester’s, tells the Dukes that they have to beware of Gloucester who only has his own self
