Plot

Part One

Christopher, a 15-year-old math prodigy, discovers his neighbor’s dog dead with a garden fork sticking out of it. The neighbor, Mrs. Shears, arrives as Christopher’s teacher, Siobhan, narrates by reading Christopher’s writings about the incident. A Policeman arrives and questions Christopher about the dog’s death. Christopher hits the Policeman when he tries to lift him by the arm. He is arrested and taken to the police station. After the Duty Sergeant questions Christopher and lets him go with a warning, Christopher’s father, Ed, tells him to keep out of people’s business. Siobhan reads a section from Christopher’s writing where he describes his mother Judy’s death from a heart attack.

Christopher begins investigating the death of Mrs. Shears’ dog. His neighbors shrug him off, except for Mrs. Alexander, a kind hard-of-hearing woman. She tells Christopher that he shouldn’t be asking people about the dog and reluctantly has to reveal that Judy had an affair with Mrs. Shears’
