Context

John Steinbeck wrote the novel Of Mice and Men with the intent to eventually convert it into a staged work. Steinbeck’s basis for the book came from his own experiences as a bindlestiff (a hobo who travels to different jobs with only a pack on his back) before his writing career. The novel Of Mice and Men is one of the most banned books in history, mainly for its use of racial slurs in regards to the character of Crooks, who is African American.
