Overview

Synopsis

When 39-year-old Bev is made redundant from an admin job in the NHS she begins to face the same struggles as her 24-year-old son Adam - who has never had a job. We see their conflicts with each other (and their darkly comic job centre "work coach" Carol) played out through both perspectives. While the play is primarily a drama, there is comic relief in the form of Adam's builder mate Gaz and tender moments with his girlfriend Sinéad, as they attempt to build a life together despite their money worries, Bev's disapproval and Sinéad's abusive ex-boyfriend. The action flows continuously from scene to scene using minimal set and props. Adam and Bev exist both separately and together in an imaginary world where they communicate with the audience, moving fluidly between the real and imaginary.
