About Peridot Theatre Company

Peridot Theatre's first production was in August 1985. The name "Peridot" comes from the green precious gemstone, which is one of the birthstones for the month of August. The first Peridot production, "Moving" by Stanley Price, and two of the following three productions were performed at the Monash High School Theatrette in Clayton. This venue, however, proved to be unsuitable for a variety of reasons. In November 1986, Peridot moved to its current home at the Unicorn Theatre, with the first production in its new home being "Patrick Pearse Hotel" by Hugh Leonard.

The company is managed by a dedicated Management Board who share the decision-making and responsibilities of running the company. Board members are elected at the Annual General Meeting. Members of the company provide a welcoming atmosphere before and after the shows and assist with building sets, making costumes and providing support in many other ways.

Peridot has established itself as one of the leading non-professional theatre companies in Melbourne and is proud of the quality of its productions. We are a subscriber-based company with a loyal membership (Friends of Peridot) and are able to put around 10,000 "bums on seats" every year. In addition to good facilities, refreshments and high-quality theatre, our members also eachreceive a monthly newsletter titled GEMS.

Each of the four productions each year has a season of 13 performances, with the addition of a Charity Preview performance (the night before the official opening night) where the performance is given to a local benevolent group as a fund raiser.

Over the years, a One Act Play Season and The Monash One Act Play Festival have been added to the theatre season. We occasionally offer acting and technical workshops (stage management, lighting, sound etc) where interested people who have no experience can learn skills that are needed to become involved.
