Overview
About Three Notch Theatre
Welcome to Three Notch Theatre, home of The Newtowne Players. The Newtowne Players was formed by Artistic Director Wendy Heidrich and a large core group of founding executive council. The group quickly began to grow, and it wasn't long before they realized the necessity for a permanent space to call home. The group tried several different avenues to find places to perform. Its first true production was held in the basement of the former Do-Dah Deli on the square in Leonardtown, Maryland. It was received with much enthusiasm, but the basement could not become a permanent home. They continued to look at a variety of venues, even performing in the streets for "Hot Summer Nights on Fenwick," and presented a "Mystery Dinner Theatre" at the Olde Breton Inn for the Knights of Columbus. Today, The Newtowne Players have achieved what many thought to be impossible. We have a home, appropriately named Three Notch Theatre, home of The Newtowne Players.
Before becoming a theatre, Three notch Theatre served the community for more than three decades as a public library. With the support of the St. Mary's County Commissioners and the Redevelopment Authority, The Newtowne Players took possession of the building in 2005 and began the transformation from library to community theatre - stripping the building down to bare walls and floors, erecting the seating area and revolving stage and setting up space for the lobby, green room, dressing room and box office. The work was accomplished by an army of volunteers, and we are proud to continue to be an all volunteer organization. We believe Three Notch Theatre is a memorable experience for all of those who step through our doors. It is truly a community theatre: for the community, in the community, and by the community.
