About Ipswich Gilbert and Sullivan Society

As an amateur dramatic and operatic society dedicated to the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, we have performed at least one of the Savoy Operas almost every year at various theatres in the Ipswich area since before most of us were born!

We all love the enduring comedy and beautiful music they contain and the chance to tread the boards at Woodbridge’s Seckford Theatre each autumn. Although these operas were created towards the end of the Victorian era, the jokes and satire of Gilbert remain fresh today, enhanced by Sullivan’s glorious music. The G&S operas have inspired writers as diverse as Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton – the musical).

We rehearse year-round on Mondays at 7.30 p.m. at Belstead Village Hall, near Ipswich (see the map below). The show cast rehearse for the annual theatre production in late summer and early autumn. Open Auditions for the show are held in May (see the infobox on our home page for details). In spring and summer, we become a choir, learning a range of music from Classical to rock and pop, ready for our charity concerts in spring and early summer.
