From Broadway to the Bard, this degree program features practical learning experiences, international theater studies and the opportunity to both study with a highly credentialed faculty and be mentored by accomplished theater professionals. Freshmen Theater Arts Majors will study Basic Acting, Voice, Stagecraft and the History of Theater on the campus at Madison, NJ. During the student's second semester of Sophomore year or first semester of Junior year, they will spend a semester at FDU’s overseas campus in England. Wroxton College is located just outside Stratford-on-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare and the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Upon returning to Madison, students will be able to track into a variety of areas such as Acting, Musical Theater, Directing, Playwriting or Design & Technical Production. They will also have the opportunity to intern with a casting director, theatrical agent or small off Broadway theater company in New York City. Madison’s proximity to New York City enables students to take advantage of the many opportunities available in the “theater capital of the world”, such as seeing professional shows in our "Night at the Theater" class.
Theater Homepage ImageThe Theater Program produces four main stage productions each year—including two musicals—in the 350-seat Dreyfuss Theater, all directed and designed by professionals in their area. In addition, we typically produce at least three productions in the Barn Theater, our newly renovated black box theater.
The Barn Theater season includes at least one fully produced departmental production—often a new play, written by a professional playwright. In addition, the student-run theater organization, Fairleigh Dramatics, presents two plays or musicals along with other events.
An audition is required to be accepted as a Theater Major and additional scholarship money is available based on a student's potential. Auditions take place throughout the year and dates and times can be obtained from the Admissions office - 973 443 8900 or www.fdu.edu/audition.
