Parker Theatre is a nonprofit 501c3 organization and was founded in 1985 by Thomas W. Parker and Joanne M. Parker.
The theatre known as City Rep initially performed in spaces such as Abravanel Hall, Kingsbury Hall and the Capitol Theatre. A 100 seat theatre was set up in the ZCMI mall and then eventually moved to the Utah Theatre in 1988. When the Utah Theatre was sold in 1992, the organization moved to the former Bowers Furniture building at 638 S. State Street and was remodeled to a 250 seat theatre.
In 2007 the theatre was reorganized and moved temporarily moved its operations to the former Ballet West Training Center at 237 S. State. The building was remodeled and had a 99 seat theatre with wrap around seating on three sides.
In June of 2011, a permanent home for the organization was established with the purchase of the historic Avalon movie theatre and an extensive remodeling project commenced with an opening of April 2012.
