Hello!
Thank you for your interest in becoming one of our program's standardized patients. My name is Crysta Herman and I'm the Academic Coordinator for Weber State University's new Physician Assistant Program. Our new curriculum is unique from other's in a way that we hire actors to be "patients" for our students to diagnose and treat, just as they would a real patient. We are in need of professional actors to make our students experiences as real as possible.
Our cases generally run on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 - 5:00 PM (sometimes Mondays) and consist of playing the same patient for 4 different student encounters. It may be required to show up 30-60 minutes prior to the start of the cases from time to time if moulage makeup is required for the case. The patient will be provided with a script with symptoms and answers to specific questions the student may ask and a general overview of the patient and their history. This may require some ad libbing when it comes to chatting with the students, like you may do in a medical appointment, and sometimes being an angry, sad, or difficult patient. You are not required to have any medical knowledge, and we want questions asked and answered the way any patient would.
This is an hourly/as needed position that pays $20 an hour. In order to make our medical cases as real as possible, we have several actors working for us that we rotate through througout the semester. We will select individuals for the part that best fit the curriculum and medical scenario (For example: we don't want a 20 year old coming in with a heart condition usually found in 60+ year olds). We need individuals of all ages, genders, and ethnicities, but will choose the actor for the part based on the medical scenario.
We will sometimes also need help with patient models for our clinical medicine labs and skills labs. These occur generally on Thursdays or Fridays and last 4 hours. They can be in the morning from 8:00 AM -12:00 PM or afternoons from 1:00 AM - 5:00 PM. For these labs we generally need a person that can act as a model for the students to perform activities such as physical exam skills or point of care ultrasounds, although some of these may require a script similar to the other patient encounters from time to time.
