About

Madonna University’s theatre training is organized through its Repertory Theatre and Lyric Theatre ensembles, both housed within the Performing Arts department. These programs are open to all students—regardless of major or experience—and offer an inclusive environment for first-time performers as well as seasoned artists. Lyric Theatre specializes in musicals and operatic productions, while the Repertory Theatre focuses on thought-provoking dramatic works and original plays.

Each academic year, Lyric Theatre typically stages two full-scale musical productions in the university’s Kresge Hall—ranging from classics like The Phantom of the Opera, Into the Woods, and Urinetown to original and director-compiled revues. The productions are rehearsed over the semester and performed as public events, giving participants extensive stage time in singing, dancing, and ensemble work.

Repertory Theatre presents smaller cast productions—often socially resonant dramas or original works—under the direction of the repertory company. These performances are free to the public and designed to engage with community causes, sometimes including outreach or service components. Both ensembles welcome students into major and ensemble roles, technical crew, stage management, or production support.

Alongside performance opportunities, Madonna offers academic coursework and electives in theatre-related areas through its broader Performing Arts structure. While there isn’t a dedicated theatre major, students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Musical Theatre, combining vocal training, music and performance studies. Community students can also receive performing arts scholarships for participation in ensembles and productions.

Madonna’s theatre programs foster hands-on learning, personal growth, and collaborative artistry in a small university setting. With no audition barriers, every student has the chance to engage with musical theatre and dramatic performance. The program reinforces practical skills—from acting and voice to backstage production—while contributing to a welcoming, service-minded campus culture.
