Western Connecticut State University

About

Western Connecticut State University’s Department of Theatre Arts offers both a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts, with concentrations in Acting, Design/Technology, and Stage Management. Additionally, students can apply to the audition-based BFA in Musical Theatre—a nationally recognized program with rigorous performance training and a record of winning national awards for productions like Parade, Evita, and The Drowsy Chaperone.

The B.A. in Theatre Arts is ideal for students who want a broad theatre education grounded in liberal arts. It does not require an audition and encourages exploration in performance, theatre management, and dramaturgy. Core coursework includes acting, technical theatre, theatre history, playwriting, social issues in theatre, and a senior portfolio capstone.

The B.F.A. in Theatre Arts provides intensive training across three focus areas: Acting, Design/Technology, and Stage Management. Admission is audition- or interview-based, and students engage in advanced studio work, production labs, and portfolio development throughout the degree. Practical experience is a key part of the curriculum.

The B.F.A. in Musical Theatre is highly competitive and performance-intensive. Students complete four years of training in singing, acting, movement, voice technique, audition prep, and dance. The program includes private lessons, master classes with Broadway professionals, and a senior showcase in New York City for industry exposure.

Students participate in six mainstage productions annually in WCSU’s state-of-the-art Visual & Performing Arts Center, with opportunities to work in all aspects of theatre—from acting and staging to set design and wardrobe. The department emphasizes hands-on educational experiences and frequent interaction with visiting professionals from Broadway and regional theatre.
