Belgian playwright and librettos Gustave Vaëz (in full Jean-Nicolas-Gustave Van Nieuwen-Huysen) produced a large body of works during his lifetime, many of which were staged in Brussels. However, it is his collaborations with French writer Alphonse Royer which are best remembered, particularly the opera librettos for Donizetti's La favorite, and the French translation of Lucia di Lammermoor.
