Biography
Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin was an American novelist and short story writer. Her works were known for their realistic depiction of women's secret lives and desires, often with a skeptical eye towards the constraints of marriage. Ironically, Chopin's negative view of marriage in her fiction came after she was widowed in her early thirties. Chopin also explored topics such as Southern Identity (many of her works are set in Louisiana), slavery and racism, and restrictive social norms. Despite the controversy surrounding her works when they were first published, today they are seen as a touchstone of early American feminism.
