Ned Sherrin (1931–2007) was a prolific British director, producer, writer, and broadcaster whose career spanned theatre, television, radio, and film. Born in Low Ham, Somerset, England, Sherrin initially studied law at Oxford University before discovering his true passion lay in entertainment and satire. His quick wit, sharp intellect, and talent for political and musical comedy made him one of the most influential figures in British broadcasting during the second half of the 20th century.

Sherrin rose to fame in the early 1960s as the creator and producer of the groundbreaking BBC television series That Was the Week That Was (1962–63), a political satire program that revolutionized British television. The show, starring David Frost, brought a fresh and daring comedic voice to public discourse, challenging authority and setting the stage for future generations of political satire. Its success cemented Sherrin’s reputation as a bold innovator unafraid to push boundaries in both style and subject matter.

In addition to his television work, Sherrin made substantial contributions to the stage. He directed and produced numerous plays and revues in London’s West End, often combining biting humor with musical sophistication. His most enduring theatrical success came in 1976 when he co-conceived and directed Side by Side by Sondheim, a musical revue celebrating the songs of Stephen Sondheim. The production, which featured performers such as Millicent Martin, Julia McKenzie, and David Kernan, became an international hit, earning Tony and Olivier nominations and helping introduce Sondheim’s work to a broader global audience.

Beyond Side by Side by Sondheim, Sherrin continued to work prolifically across media. He produced and directed for film (The Virgin Soldiers, 1969), wrote and compiled numerous stage revues, and became a beloved voice on BBC Radio 4, where he hosted the long-running arts program Loose Ends. Known for his urbane charm and eloquence, Sherrin was also a prolific author, publishing books of memoirs, anthologies of quotations, and reflections on his long and varied career in the arts.

Ned Sherrin was honored with a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1997 for his contributions to broadcasting. Until his death in 2007, he remained a fixture of British cultural life — admired for his wit, erudition, and unrelenting advocacy for intelligent entertainment. His legacy endures not only in his television and radio work but also through Side by Side by Sondheim, which remains one of the most enduring musical revues ever staged.
