Peter Nichols was born in Bristol in 1927 and attended the Old Vic Theatre School. After completing his National Service, he became an actor in repertory theatre and television for five years, before becoming teacher in London.Nichols wrote twenty original plays and adaptations for television, six screenplays, and several stage plays, including A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, The National Health, Forget-Me-Not Lane, Chez Nous, Privates on Parade, Passion Play, and A Piece of My Mind. The 1985 Broadway revival of Joe Egg won two Tony Awards. His autobiography, Feeling You're Behind, was published in 1985.
