Carolyn Leigh was an American lyricist known for her sophisticated wit, emotional clarity, and elegant command of language in mid-20th-century musical theatre. She was born on October 21, 1926, in New York City, and became active during the Golden Age of Broadway, writing lyrics that balanced charm, humor, and psychological insight. Leigh’s work is distinguished by its conversational tone and lyrical intelligence, often giving performers material that is both musically rewarding and dramatically rich.
Leigh achieved her greatest theatrical success through her collaboration with composer Cy Coleman. Together, they created several acclaimed musicals, most notably Little Me (1962), a rapid-fire musical comedy featuring lyrics that matched the show’s comic precision and theatrical inventiveness, and Wildcat (1960), which starred Lucille Ball. She also wrote lyrics for How Now, Dow Jones (1967), a musical comedy about 1960s Wall Street, and contributed to Peter Pan, adding new lyrics for the Broadway revival, including the iconic “I Gotta Crow.” Her ability to shift between comedy and sincerity made her a highly respected voice in musical theatre.
In addition to her stage work, Carolyn Leigh wrote lyrics for popular songs and film projects, expanding her influence beyond Broadway. She passed away on November 19, 1983, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated for its elegance, intelligence, and performer-friendly craftsmanship.
