Phil Collins is an English drummer, singer, and songwriter. He is best known for his career with the rock band, Genesis, and for his subsequent solo career. Born and raised in London, Collins started playing the drums at the age of five and worked as a child actor while completing his training at drama school. He joined Genesis in 1970 as their drummer and became lead singer in 1975 after Peter Gabriel left the band. While Genesis took a break in the early 1980s, Collins launched a hugely successful solo career and scored several hit singles, including “In the Air Tonight”, “Against All Odds”, “I Missed Again”, and “Another Day in Paradise”. He has reunited off and on with Genesis several times over the last thirty years. Collins is acknowledged as one of the greatest drummers of all time and several musicians have cited his drumming as a huge influence upon their work.
In the mid-1990s, Collins was asked to write the music for the Disney film Tarzan. His song, “You’ll Be in My Heart”, won the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Song. In 2002, he was awarded the DIsney Legend Award and worked with the company again the following year on Brother Bear. Collins reunited with Disney on a Broadway production of Tarzan in 2006.
Collins received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of Genesis) in 2010. He published his autobiography, Not Dead Yet, in 2016.
