David H. Bell

David H. Bell is an acclaimed American lyricist, director, choreographer, and playwright with a distinguished career in musical theatre and stage direction. Known for his versatility and storytelling finesse, Bell has contributed to numerous original musicals, adaptations, and theatrical revivals across the United States and abroad.

As a lyricist and book writer, Bell has collaborated on a number of musical theatre projects, including the historical revue Hot Mikado (a jazz-infused adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, co-created with Rob Bowman) and The Good War, a musical based on Studs Terkel’s oral history of World War II, which earned a Tony Award nomination during its run at the Northlight Theatre in Illinois. His lyrics are noted for their wit, emotional depth, and integration with character-driven storytelling.

Bell has also had an extensive career as a director and choreographer, serving as the Associate Artistic Director of Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre and the Artistic Director of Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. He has directed productions at prestigious regional theaters including the Goodman Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Marriott Theatre, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where he has become a frequent and celebrated collaborator.
