Joe Brooks

Joe Brooks (1938–2011) was an American composer, songwriter, and filmmaker best known for writing the chart-topping hit “You Light Up My Life,” one of the most enduring ballads of the 1970s. A versatile and ambitious artist, Brooks found success in advertising, pop music, and film, leaving behind a legacy marked by both major acclaim and personal controversy.

Born Joseph Kaplan on March 11, 1938, in Manhattan, New York, Brooks began his career writing jingles for television commercials. He quickly rose to prominence in the advertising world, creating memorable slogans and tunes for major brands such as Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and American Airlines. His catchy and emotionally resonant style made him one of the most sought-after jingle writers of the 1960s and early ’70s.

Brooks transitioned into pop songwriting and film, and in 1977 wrote, directed, and scored the romantic drama You Light Up My Life. The title song, performed by Debby Boone, became a cultural phenomenon—spending 10 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning Brooks both an Academy Award and a Grammy Award. The ballad became a staple of wedding playlists and soft rock radio for decades to follow.

Despite the massive success of You Light Up My Life, Brooks struggled to replicate its impact. He continued to work on various film and music projects throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but none reached the same level of acclaim. He also pursued Broadway ambitions with the musical In My Life (2005), which was poorly received by critics and closed quickly.

Later in life, Brooks’s legacy was marred by serious legal issues, including multiple allegations of sexual assault. He died by suicide in 2011 before he could stand trial.
