Italian librettist and poet Giovanni Francesco Busenello was born in Venice and studied at the University of Padua. At university he trained as a lawyer, a profession in which he had great success.

His interest in opera led him to become a member of the Accademia degli Incogniti. His poetic writing was prolific, and he took a particular interest in singers. Perhaps the most well remembered of his libretti is L'incoronazione di Poppea, which was set to music by Monteverdi and a group of other composers.
