Vernon Duke, born Vladimir Dukelsky on October 10, 1903, in Parafianovo, Russia (then part of the Russian Empire), was a classically trained composer who achieved remarkable success in American musical theatre. A child prodigy, he studied composition at the Kiev Conservatory before fleeing the Russian Revolution with his family. Settling in the United States in the 1920s, he adopted the name Vernon Duke for his popular and Broadway compositions, while continuing to use Dukelsky for his concert works.

Duke’s theatre music career blossomed in the 1930s, with major successes on Broadway. He is best remembered for composing the music for Cabin in the Sky (1940), a groundbreaking all-Black musical that starred Ethel Waters and featured choreography by George Balanchine. His most popular songs include “April in Paris,” “I Can’t Get Started,” and “Autumn in New York,” all of which became jazz standards.

Throughout his career, Duke collaborated with some of the greatest lyricists of the era, including Ira Gershwin, Ogden Nash, and Yip Harburg. His versatility allowed him to move seamlessly between classical music, jazz, and Broadway show tunes. While never as widely known as some contemporaries, his contributions remain highly respected among musicians and theatre historians.

Duke also wrote concert works, ballets, and orchestral pieces, some of which were performed by prestigious ensembles. His dual musical identity—Dukelsky for the concert hall and Duke for the stage—made him a unique figure in 20th-century music. He also penned an autobiography, Passport to Paris, recounting his multicultural artistic journey.

Vernon Duke died on January 16, 1969, in Santa Monica, California. His legacy lives on through his lush melodies and the enduring popularity of his songs, which continue to be performed and recorded by jazz vocalists and theatre artists alike.
