Biography
Jennifer Hartley
Dr. Jennifer S. Hartley is a Scottish writer, therapist, and practitioner of Applied Theatre. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and graduated from Strathclyde University with a degree in English before completing a PhD at Queen Margaret University. After working as a director throughout the UK, she focused on drama therapy, specifically utilizing Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. Hartley primarily worked in South America, producing theatre in both English and Spanish.
Hartley has published books and articles about her work and acts as an educational consultant for theatres around the world. She founded the charity Theatre Versus Oppression, which uses theatre to create positive change and expression for people who have experienced oppression. As a playwright, she has written The Sin Eater, ’Til Death Do Us Part, and The Art of Silence, the latter of which has been produced in over eight countries.
