Nadine Roda-Gil (1940–1990) was a French writer and lyricist whose creative partnership with her husband, Étienne Roda-Gil, left an important if less widely known mark on French cultural life. Born in France, Nadine developed an early passion for literature and the arts, later channeling her creativity into collaborative projects that blended poetry, political awareness, and music. Her life and work were intertwined with the artistic and intellectual currents of postwar France, where she and Étienne moved in circles of musicians, poets, and political activists.

She is best remembered for her role as co-librettist of the opera Ça Ira, a grand work on the French Revolution conceived with Étienne Roda-Gil in the late 1980s. Together, the couple developed the French libretto, weaving historical events into allegorical scenes that emphasized the Revolution’s themes of liberty, tyranny, and collective struggle. Their script drew on Nadine’s literary imagination and sense of dramatic structure, giving the opera both narrative drive and symbolic resonance.

Although Roger Waters would later adapt and expand Ça Ira into an English-language opera with a full orchestral score, Nadine’s early contributions provided the foundation for the project. Her work reflected a strong interest in history and politics, consistent with the couple’s lifelong commitment to social justice and intellectual independence. The opera remains the clearest testament to her artistry and ambition.

Beyond Ça Ira, Nadine collaborated with Étienne on a variety of writing and artistic endeavors, sharing in the creative process that defined his career. Their partnership was both personal and professional, grounded in a mutual belief that art should be both poetic and politically engaged. Friends and colleagues often remembered her as an essential counterpart to Étienne’s more public persona, providing insight, critique, and inspiration.

Nadine Roda-Gil’s life was tragically cut short when she died in 1990, at the age of 50. Though her career was brief compared to her husband’s, her work endures through the libretto of Ça Ira and her influence on French cultural life of the period. Today she is remembered as a writer whose contributions, though less widely recognized, helped shape one of the most ambitious operatic projects of the late 20th century.
