Biography
Matt Stone
Matt Stone is an American writer, producer, composer, and performer best known as the co-creator of the animated series South Park and the Broadway hit musical The Book of Mormon. Born in Houston, Texas, and raised in Colorado, Stone met his creative partner Trey Parker at the University of Colorado, where their shared love of satire and irreverent humor led to early collaborations.
Their animated show South Park debuted in 1997 and became a cultural phenomenon, noted for its biting social commentary, dark humor, and fearless approach to taboo subjects. Alongside television, Stone has co-written and produced films such as South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and Team America: World Police.
In 2011, Stone and Parker, along with composer Robert Lopez, created The Book of Mormon, a satirical musical that lampoons organized religion while celebrating the human search for hope and meaning. The show won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has been an international hit.
As a composer and lyricist, Stone combines catchy, theatrical melodies with sharply comedic lyrics, balancing outrageous humor with surprising heart. His musical work demonstrates his deep appreciation for traditional Broadway craft, even while pushing the form into edgier territory.
Stone remains an active force in entertainment, continuing to develop new projects that blend comedy, music, and social critique.
