Warren Leight is an American playwright, screenwriter, and television producer best known for his Tony Award-nominated play Side Man and for his influential work as showrunner of the long-running NBC series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. With a career that spans theatre, film, and television, Leight is known for his emotionally resonant storytelling, richly drawn characters, and deep exploration of family, trauma, and the human condition.

Born in New York City in 1957, Leight grew up in a household immersed in music—his father was a jazz trumpeter, which would later inspire much of his creative work. After studying at Stanford University, Leight began his career in theatre, eventually gaining critical acclaim for Side Man (1998), a semi-autobiographical drama about a jazz musician and the toll his career takes on his family. The play won the 1999 Tony Award for Best Play and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, establishing Leight as a significant voice in contemporary American theatre.

In addition to Side Man, Leight’s other plays include No Foreigners Beyond This Point, Glimmer, Glimmer & Shine, and James and Annie. His stage work is often noted for its lyrical dialogue, emotional honesty, and focus on artists, families, and personal sacrifice.

Leight transitioned successfully into television and film, writing screenplays such as The Night We Never Met and Mother’s Day. He is perhaps most widely recognized for his tenure as executive producer and showrunner of Law & Order: SVU, where he led the series through some of its most critically acclaimed seasons. His work on SVU emphasized character-driven storytelling and brought greater attention to complex social issues.

Warren Leight continues to work across mediums, developing new plays, screen projects, and television series. His storytelling is marked by empathy, humor, and a keen understanding of flawed but deeply human characters, making him one of the most versatile dramatists of his generation.
