Biography
Harold Karr
Harold Karr (1915–2003) was an American composer best known for his work in musical theatre during the mid-20th century. Although not a prolific figure in Broadway history, Karr made a notable mark with his lively, melodic compositions, particularly through his collaborations with lyricist and librettist Matt Dubey.
Karr is best remembered for composing the music for the Broadway musical Happy Town (1959) and, more significantly, New Faces of 1952—a popular musical revue that helped launch the careers of performers like Eartha Kitt, Paul Lynde, and Alice Ghostley. The revue featured songs by multiple composers, but Karr contributed standout numbers, including the memorable “Monotonous,” famously performed by Kitt. His music displayed a gift for playful rhythms, theatrical flair, and accessibility.
While Karr’s output on Broadway was limited, his work in cabaret, revue, and off-Broadway settings added to his reputation as a skilled and tuneful composer. He often worked in close collaboration with Dubey, crafting songs that were witty, satirical, and well-suited for character-driven performance.
Karr’s music, though not widely known today, reflects the energy and innovation of post-war American musical theatre. His contributions to revue-style productions helped shape the genre’s evolution and gave rise to songs that remain favorites in cabaret repertoires.
Harold Karr passed away in 2003. He is remembered for his stylish and often humorous musical compositions and for playing a part in the golden era of mid-century American musical entertainment.
