Romney Brent (January 26, 1902 – September 18, 1976) was a Mexican-born actor, director, and librettist whose career spanned theatre, film, and musical comedy on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, he was educated in the United States at the University of Texas and then at Yale, where he became involved in theatrical performance. He moved to New York in the 1920s and soon gained attention for his charm, wit, and versatility on stage.

Brent’s career encompassed acting in plays and musicals, directing productions in both English and Spanish, and writing libretti for musical theatre. In the 1930s and 1940s, he became associated with Noël Coward and the London theatre scene, performing in Coward’s plays and musicals with an elegance and comedic flair that made him a favorite with audiences. His work as a librettist included contributions to musicals that blended lighthearted humor with sophisticated wordplay, showcasing his sharp ear for dialogue and timing.

In addition to his writing and directing, Brent appeared in numerous Broadway productions and also worked extensively in London’s West End. His credits included roles in The Cat and the Fiddle, Conversation Piece, and Pacific 1860. He collaborated with prominent composers and lyricists of the era, crafting libretti that were both structurally strong and rich in character detail.

Brent also acted in films, particularly in the 1930s and 1940s, where his refined manner and cosmopolitan charm translated well to the screen. Later in his career, he returned to Mexico, where he continued to act, direct, and teach, contributing to the development of theatre in his home country.

Romney Brent died on September 18, 1976, in Mexico City. Remembered for his sophistication, wit, and artistic versatility, he left a legacy as a consummate man of the theatre—equally at home on stage, behind the scenes, or shaping the structure of a musical as a librettist.
