Biography
Theodore J. Flicker
Theodore J. Flicker (June 6, 1930 – September 12, 2014) was an American playwright, screenwriter, director, and actor whose work spanned stage, film, and television, often blending sharp social satire with offbeat humor. Born in Freehold Borough, New Jersey, Flicker studied drama at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before embarking on a career in theatre during the 1950s. He became a prominent figure in the improvisational comedy movement, co-founding New York’s Premise, an influential improv troupe that nurtured a new wave of comedic talent.
Flicker’s theatrical breakthrough came with his satirical stage play The Nervous Set (1959), a jazz-infused musical about the Beat Generation, which he co-wrote with Jay Landesman. The show premiered in St. Louis before moving to Broadway, where it gained a cult following for its unconventional style and score by Tommy Wolf and Fran Landesman. His stage work demonstrated a keen ear for contemporary dialogue and a talent for skewering cultural trends.
Transitioning to film, Flicker wrote and directed The President’s Analyst (1967), a cult classic that combined political satire, espionage parody, and absurdist comedy. The film, starring James Coburn, showcased Flicker’s unique ability to mix biting commentary with surreal humor. He also directed Up in the Cellar (1970) and contributed as a writer to other projects, maintaining his signature satirical voice.
Flicker was also active in television, directing episodes of popular shows such as Barney Miller, Night Court, and The Andy Griffith Show. His versatility allowed him to work fluidly between genres, from broad comedy to sharp political lampoon, while still retaining a distinct creative identity.
Theodore J. Flicker passed away at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2014 at the age of 84. Though perhaps best remembered for The President’s Analyst, his body of work across stage, screen, and television reflects a career dedicated to inventive, thought-provoking comedy that challenged audiences while making them laugh.
