Phyllis Newman (1933–2019) was a Tony Award–winning American actress, singer, and humanitarian whose career spanned Broadway, television, film, and cabaret. Beloved for her warmth, wit, and versatility, Newman was a fixture of the New York theatre scene for more than five decades. She made her Broadway debut in 1952 and went on to earn critical acclaim in both comedic and dramatic roles, winning the 1962 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Subways Are for Sleeping.

In 1979, Newman co-created and starred in The Madwoman of Central Park West, a semi-autobiographical one-woman musical that blended storytelling with songs by an extraordinary roster of composers and lyricists, including Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Comden & Green, and Barry Manilow. The show explored the challenges of balancing career, marriage, and motherhood, with Newman’s trademark humor and honesty. It became one of her signature achievements, showcasing both her singing and her candid, engaging stage presence.

Beyond her theatrical work, Newman appeared frequently on television, with credits ranging from guest roles on series like Murder, She Wrote and Thirtysomething to numerous appearances as a panelist on game shows, including What’s My Line? and Match Game. She also made memorable appearances in films such as The Human Stain and Mannequin.

A passionate advocate for women in the arts, Newman founded The Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative under The Actors Fund in 1996, providing healthcare and support for women in the entertainment industry dealing with serious medical conditions. Her advocacy work earned her widespread respect and several humanitarian awards.
