Konstantin Shilovsky

Konstantin Shilovsky was a Russian poet, playwright, and librettist best known for his collaboration with composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on the opera Eugene Onegin. Born in 1849 into a noble family, Shilovsky was well-educated and moved in the elite literary and artistic circles of 19th-century Russia. He studied at Moscow University and later became involved in the theater world, both as a writer and director. Although his literary output was limited, his work left a significant mark through his contribution to one of Russia’s most beloved operas.

Shilovsky’s most notable achievement came through his partnership with Tchaikovsky, whom he met while involved with amateur theatre in Moscow. Together, they adapted Alexander Pushkin’s classic verse novel Eugene Onegin into an operatic libretto. While Tchaikovsky did much of the adaptation himself, Shilovsky is credited as co-librettist and was instrumental in shaping the structure and dialogue of the opera. Konstantin Shilovsky died in 1893, the same year as Tchaikovsky. Though his literary legacy is limited in volume, his role as co-librettist of Eugene Onegin secures his place in the history of Russian opera.
